Since I last updated the blog, we have had a terrible and shocking event in my family. My cousin, Cathy Rodruan, died suddenly this past Thursday. We are all still in shock and trying to get our arms around this tragedy. Cathy is second from the left in this picture taken on April 28th at the bridal shower for my 'almost daughter-in-law, Elizabeth' (in the background just behind Cathy). My son, Justin, and Elizabeth will be married on August 18th this summer. Although Cathy and I emailed regularly, this was the last time I saw her. (FYI: my Mom is next to Cathy on the left; my sister Gigi is to the right of Cathy; and, my Aunt Rita is on the right end...next to me). Cathy: I love you so much and will miss your warm hugs, your kindness through the years, and the family times we have shared.
We are in Grand Teton National Park, just north of Jackson Hole. The fabulous thing about the Teton Mountain Range is the flat valleys that butt right up to the mountains....so they are right there in front of you - without all the foothills that usually keep the mountains at such a distance.
This is the view about 100 yards from our RV site - we are staying in Colter Bay Village at the RV Park....all inside the national park. Is that not a gorgeous view!!! The weather has turned cold due to a front that came through today. We had snow showers throughout the day and it is expected to be in the 20's tonight....brrrrr!!!
This is Jenny Lake - one of a number of glacial lakes in the park. These glacial lakes are an interesting greenish-blue and, of course, were formed when the massive glaciers melted millions of years ago. Today, it was so windy on the lake you could see whitecaps!
It was not a great day for outdoor activities, so we headed back into Jackson Hole. Here in the Teton Village - the major ski center - is a picture of the newly opened aerial tram building. It is easy to see some of the ski slopes in the background.
During the summer months, the tram still operates taking visitors to the top of Rendezvous Mountain - a 4,139 ft vertical lift in 15 minutes! This shot shows the next group headed out on their way to the top.
We also snapped a shot of the famous 'Antler Arches' in the Town Square in Jackson. There are actually four of these arches - one on each of the four corners of the square.
It was getting close to dusk on the way back, so we went on one of the scenic drives in the park hoping to catch glimpses of some of the wildlife. The lighting's not great here, but this is a beaver dam. I was surprised at how large it was ... must be housing quite a large family!
Then, we lucked out seeing a 'lady' moose munching her way through the creekside. This picture is one that Dick took. His pics are amazing when compared to those I snap w/ my iPhone.
And....YES....these are two grizzlies munching away on grass and digging up yummy treats out of the ground. As you drive around the park, it is easy to tell when wildlife are in view - cars are parked by the side of the road and the crowds are snapping pics with their cameras.....may of whom have these fancy mega-lenses that look like cheerleader megaphones!
We will be here in the park for a week. As the weather warms Monday, we plan to do some hiking, take a float trip down the Snake River, and do a horseback ride. We are looking forward to a fun week.
